Very often, airlines and airports search our aviation safety management software websites for the job description of safety managers. Our first safety manager job description came from a South African CAA website several years ago. Recently, I stumbled on another that is very good from Meridian. I modified it a bit.Job Summary:
Safety Manager is responsible for the administration of the company Safety Management System (SMS) program and functions as the Chairman of the Safety Committee. This position monitors safety issues, provides safety education, investigates incidents and accidents, acts as a resident expert on safety matters, helps to develop loss control standards, and makes recommendations to improve safety in the workplace.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the Safety Management System (SMS) program and for overall safety at Company facilities.
- Ensures that safety program elements are carried out.
- Review all hazards; receive all safety forms - feedback or reports evaluate with management. Makes recommendations to correct/prevent identified safety issues. Implementation corrective or preventative action as needed or required.
- Monitors corrective/preventive actions as necessary.
- Monitors compliance with applicable regulatory safety standards.
- Research issues for possible solutions or someone else’s lesson learned.
- Monitors trends in reporting system and accident and incident reports.
- Provides regular reports to management on program status and compliance.
- Works with the Flight department and Maintenance Department, Chief Pilot and department heads.
- Assume Administrative Rights for Web based aviation safety management software program. Enroll (manage) personnel as required. Disburse program changes.
- Monitor / review data from the reported issues for high risk areas.
- Review reoccurring risk(s). Adjust operational risk profile accordingly.
- Conduct or distribute the internal evaluation audit (IEP). Review IEP audits for any corrective action or possible trends developing. If required complete the risk analysis on findings and concerns to find / address the root cause. Advise company personnel on implementing the corrective action. Issue a follow up date for any item or event that needs corrective action.
- Review reported issues' performance, evaluate with management, and direct required action as advised by Director of Ops, Chief Pilot or Safety Officer for Flight or Maintenance.
- Follow up / monitor / review all hazards (and or reports) as necessary. Implementation corrective action due to the severity or as required.
- The Emergency Response Plan (ERP) requires meetings, training and ongoing oversight to ensure preparedness and current supplies.
- Responsible for the role of Emergency Operations Coordinator for the charter ERP.
- The Chairman of the Safety Committee organizes and schedules regular safety committee quarterly or as required or risk analysis meetings.
- Keep records of committee meetings (minutes) so that activity can be followed up and management kept informed of progress.
- Communicates safety issues to all within the flight department and the company
- Makes recommendations to correct/prevent identified safety issues to mitigate the risk as part of loss control standards.
- Distribute safety related articles and accident recaps to company personnel.
- Acts as liaison with safety organizations (formal and informal) on matters of industry safety concerns
- Participate in all external safety audits. Address corrective actions as necessary
- Attend airport safety meetings as required.
- Conduct "SMS Induction" for new employees (only).
- Conduct employee (safety) meetings to promote safety
