Earthquake Causes Boom in Northeast Philadelphia

According to the U. S. Geological Survey, a 1.7 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Franklin Mills Mall in Northeast Philadelphia. The micro tremblor cause a loud boom around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27. However, no significant damage was reported.

Although no major earthquakes are on record for Philadelphia, tremors occasionally occur and residents should be prepared. After an earthquake, there might not be electric, gas, or telephone service. If you feel an earthquake:
    • Drop to the floor.
    • Take cover under a solid piece of furniture or next to an interior wall.  Cover your head and neck with your arms.
    • Hold on to a sturdy piece of furniture and be prepared to move with it. Stay where you are until the shaking stops.
    • Be prepared for aftershocks, which often follow an earthquake.
