According to the National Weather Service, summer is the peak season for lightning, which kills an average of 54 people in the United States each year. During Lightning Safety Week (June 23-29), take the time to learn these Lightning Safety Tips:
- Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
- Stay inside a building or hard-top vehicle.
- Avoid showering, bathing, and using a phone that has a cord, except in an emergency. (Cordless and cellular phones are safe to use.)
- Don't touch metal, electrical equipment, telephones, bathtubs, faucets or sinks.
- Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.
- Stay clear of tall, isolated trees, hilltops, open fields, beaches, or any metal objects that may act as lightning rods.
- Never lie flat on the ground.
- Immediately get out and away from ponds, lakes and other bodies of water.
- If you cannot find shelter, crouch with your feet together, head bowed and hands covering your ears to reduce acoustic shock.
- If someone is struck by lightning call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY. Check person’s breathing, heartbeat, pulse. Begin CPR if necessary.
